PAM flocculant price per kilogram is only one part of treatment cost. A lower bag price can produce a higher operating cost when active dose, preparation loss, solids capture, throughput, water recovery or sludge disposal are included.
Normalize the quotation
Confirm currency, Incoterm, package size, product form, active basis, quantity, freight, duty and payment terms. Compare delivered cost for the same destination and order quantity. A factory price and a delivered warehouse price are not directly comparable.
Calculate active chemical cost
For water treatment, calculate active PAM dose in milligrams per litre and multiply by treated volume. For sludge dewatering, use kilograms of active product per tonne of dry solids. For mineral processing, kilograms per tonne of dry feed may be appropriate. Pump speed or litres of stock solution are not valid comparison units without concentration and flow.
Add the process value
Record water recovery, overflow quality, solids capture, cake solids, machine throughput, energy, wash water and operator attention. A small improvement in cake solids may reduce hauling and disposal enough to outweigh a higher polymer price. Better capture can return solids to the intended product stream or reduce downstream load.
Price the operating window
A narrow optimum can create hidden cost when feed conditions vary. Count the frequency of underdose, overdose, filter blinding, DAF upset or clarifier carryover. A product that is slightly more expensive at the ideal point may cost less over a month if it remains stable across normal variation.
Include make-down efficiency
Fisheyes, incomplete hydration and shear-damaged solution waste active polymer. Record feeder calibration, stock concentration and aging. When comparing dry and emulsion products, include equipment, inversion, housekeeping and active content rather than assuming product form alone determines economy.
Use a controlled A/B plant trial
Hold feed and equipment conditions as stable as practical. Establish a baseline, run the candidate long enough to reach steady conditions and calculate cost over the same production unit. Ask for the right quotation
Send application, current product, active dose, monthly quantity, package preference and destination. A supplier cannot produce a meaningful treatment-cost comparison from “best price PAM” alone. Use the RFQ form to request a grade and delivered quotation matched to the process.
Work through an illustrative comparison
Assume Product A is delivered at 2.00 currency units per kilogram and uses 6 kg/t DS. Its polymer cost is 12.00 per tonne of dry solids. Product B costs 2.40 per kilogram but uses 4.5 kg/t DS, giving 10.80 per tonne. Before choosing B, confirm that capture, cake solids and throughput remain equal or improve. The numbers are an illustration of the method, not a recommended dose or market quotation.
If Product B also raises cake solids, calculate the avoided wet-tonnage disposal. If it lowers capture, calculate the cost of solids returned to the liquid process. A complete comparison may reverse the apparent winner.

Test price sensitivity
Calculate the break-even delivered price for the better-performing grade. If a candidate saves 1.5 kg/t DS, determine how much additional price per kilogram can be accepted before polymer cost is equal. Then add process benefits. This converts negotiation into a rational boundary rather than a demand for the lowest nominal price.
Account for inventory and logistics
Container quantity, lead time, pallet configuration, storage life and minimum order affect working capital and stockout risk. A slightly lower price can be uneconomic when it requires excess inventory or emergency replacement supply. Include sample approval time and reorder point in the procurement plan.
Keep trials commercially fair
Prepare each product correctly, calibrate the pump after concentration changes and compare on active basis. Do not give one candidate a full optimization while running another at the previous product’s setting. Share the same feed and acceptance criteria with each supplier.
Protect the decision after purchase
Store the approved trial sheet with the quotation and product specification. Track monthly dose, throughput and key quality endpoints. A gradual cost increase may come from feed solids, pump drift or make-down loss rather than price. Routine mass-balance review keeps purchasing and operations aligned.
