PAM Flocculant Types

Compare anionic, cationic and nonionic PAM flocculant types by particle charge, solids, equipment and separation target before requesting samples.

PAM flocculant types are normally described as anionic, cationic or nonionic, but ionic family is only the first decision. Charge density, molecular weight, molecular architecture, product form and the chemistry of the process water all influence the useful grade.

Anionic PAM

A common starting family for mineral suspensions, sand washing, tailings, coal washing and clarification after inorganic coagulation. Selection depends on mineral surface, salinity, pH and the desired balance between settling speed and compaction.

Cationic PAM

Frequently screened for municipal and industrial organic sludge because many biological solids carry a net negative surface charge. Charge demand and the dewatering machine determine the practical range.

Nonionic PAM

Useful in selected low-charge, acidic or mixed-mineral systems where strong ionic interaction is not the main requirement. It should be tested beside low-charge anionic candidates rather than chosen by name alone.

Why the ionic label is not a complete specification

Two products described as “anionic PAM” can produce different results because their charge content, molecular weight and chain distribution differ. Higher molecular weight may increase bridging potential, but it can also raise solution viscosity and make poor preparation more damaging. Higher charge can improve adsorption in one water and narrow the operating window in another. A defensible comparison therefore records the full trial conditions, not only the product family.

Start with the solids and the separation duty

Describe whether the feed contains biological sludge, clay, metal hydroxide, fibre, coal fines, mineral tailings, oil or a mixture. Then define what the polymer must improve: clear overflow, fast settlement, dense underflow, stable DAF float, high solids capture, permeable filter cake or lower residual turbidity. The same feed can require a different grade when the separation equipment changes.

Screen a small, deliberate sample set

A useful first round normally brackets charge density or molecular weight instead of testing many unrelated products. Prepare every sample at the same active concentration with the same make-down water and hydration time. Compare a blank, several doses and an overdose point.
